Help us help young people – 3 vacancies (readvertised)

Deadline 17 May 2021

Please note that we are re-advertising these roles in a slightly different format. The Activities Practitioner role is now separate from our Volunteer Mentoring role, and can be applied for separately or combined with a practitioner role.

We’re an effective and ambitious award-winning local charity which delivers mentoring and activities for vulnerable 5 to 21 year olds across Bath and North East Somerset and beyond (up to age 25 for young adults with SEN). We’re delighted to be advertising two roles to bring new energy and ideas to our work.

Our vision is a world in which all young people feel safe, feel heard and feel hopeful for their future. Our mission is empowering and inspiring young lives to thrive with the help of our communities, by offering positive support and opportunities to young people facing challenges.

For over twenty years our young people have been telling us they feel happier and more confident from spending time with our volunteers and professionals. We are proud to have delivered one local authority commissioned service since 2005 and a second one since 2018, alongside primary and secondary schools buying in our mentoring programmes for their students.

Due to expansion, we have three exciting practitioner roles to fill, one of which may be combined with one of the other two. The right candidates will join a small and friendly team supporting young people across our county, based in Bath with facilities for some home-based working. We look for energy, imagination, commitment and shared values. In return we invest in our staff and their wellbeing, providing regular training, supportive management and clinical supervision, with early responsibility and opportunities to develop.

Volunteer Mentoring Practitioner

We’re looking for a skilled and creative practitioner to support a diverse cohort of 11- to 21-year olds and their volunteer mentors, replacing a team member developing their role with a move to another team within the charity.

You must enjoy confidently working with young people to build relationships and understand needs, but the key aspect of this role is supporting adult volunteers to train and be matched 1-1 with young people as mentors with your support. You’ll also be working with schools and other professionals to make referrals, and dealing sensitively with families. Safeguarding experience and skills in working with other services is essential. Driving essential.

Hours: 30-37.5 hours per week, flexible, year-round, including occasional out of hours work (with TOIL).

Contract: PAYE permanent

Pay: From £12.30 per hour dependent on experience, plus pension. FTE = from £24k approx

Professional Mentoring Practitioner

Our Professional Mentoring practice supports young people with a 1-1 mentor employed by us. This enables us to help young people at a higher level of need than a volunteer can safely support, while still offering a child-centred and engaging service connecting young people with their community. We also provide primary and secondary schools with in-school professional mentors to offer students rapidly accessible support.

This new practitioner role will join existing team members in delivering these growing programmes. You’ll be directly supporting young people, but the real success of this role will come from supporting a team of adult freelance professionals to do so. We’re looking for someone skilled at engaging young people who may be harder to reach, who is also confident enabling adults to do the same. Safeguarding experience and skills in working with other services essential. Driving essential.

Activities Practitioner

You can apply to combine this role with one of the two roles above, or as a standalone position.

Offering fun, confidence-building group activities to young people is the ‘plus’ of Mentoring Plus. Young people who feel isolated, anxious or low in confidence need extra support to access activities, and this programme helps mentees make friends, try new things, experience teamwork and benefit from additional professional support.

You’ll be planning and providing an engaging weekly termtime activities session for mentees, offering a choice of sports, arts, cooking, wildlife etc with input from professional activity providers. Organising transport is key to maximising access, as is working with families to gain consents and build confident relationships.

Our weekly termtime programme based at Riverside Youth Hub in Bath has been paused during lockdown. Bringing it back to live delivery this summer is a core part of our post-Covid response, re-connecting young people and reducing isolation. Can you help us achieve this?
