Step, pedal, paddle: Flexible fundraiser returns for youth mental health

Walkers, runners, cyclists, and water lovers are being called to take part in this year’s Big BaNES 100k - a flexible, nature-based challenge supporting local youth charities Mentoring Plus and Off The Record (OTR).
Running now until Friday 26 September, the event invites local residents to cover 100km in any way they choose - be it walking, cycling, swimming, or paddling. Participants are encouraged to raise money for every step, pedal, and paddle they take.
Every pound raised will help local young people aged 5-25 access vital mental health and wellbeing support, and help protect these lifeline programmes from devastating funding cuts.
Launched last year, the Big BaNES 100k raised more than £6,500 for the two charities. Ruth Keily, CEO of Mentoring Plus, says the event’s flexibility is what makes it so special:
“Last year, our fundraisers got out on their bikes, into rivers on paddleboards, and walked countless footpaths and fields. One of our supporters, who lives with chronic fatigue syndrome, still completed the 100 km and raised over £1,000 - because the challenge could be done at their own pace and on their own terms.”
“We hope this ‘do-it-yourself’ approach will help more people enjoy our stunning countryside while giving young people the support they need.”
The challenge was inspired by local resident Annie Legge, who created The Bath 5k Map - a collection of circular walks around Bath - after the tragic loss of her niece. Her aim: to help others access the mental health benefits of time spent in nature.
Moved by Annie’s story, Mentoring Plus and Off The Record partnered with her to launch inclusive, nature-based fundraising events. Over the last year, the collaboration has raised over £15,000 through map sales and fundraising events for youth mental health support.
In the lead up to this year’s Bath Life Awards, where the charities were shortlisted for the collaboration, Annie said:
“I'm incredibly proud to champion Mentoring Plus and Off The Record through The Bath 5k Map. Their dedication to young people's mental health, combined with their collaborative approach in tough fundraising times, shows how local charities can amplify each other's impact for our community's wellbeing.”
Annie has since released a second edition of The Bath 5k Map, along with branded walking merchandise - including clothing, reusable coffee cups, and sit mats - with all proceeds going to the two charities.
Locals interested in taking part in The Big BaNES 100k can sign up online and kick off their challenge by joining a 5k Community Wellbeing Walk on Sunday, 18 May, at 12pm, departing from Prior Park. Hosted by the two charities and The Bath 5k Map, the walk will be guided by Walk Bath and Bathscape, and will mark the conclusion of Mental Health Awareness Week.
