We’d love you to show Charlie, Stan,Tony, Robert, Jamie and Becki huge amounts of support as they push those pedals up to 80 miles as part of Bike Bath.
Some of our volunteers, staff, and young people are taking to their bikes to raise funds for our services to support and inspire young people in the local area — the fourth year we’ll be fielding a mentor/mentee pair at the popular cycling sportive, Bike Bath.
We’re delighted to be named as the supported charity for Bike Bath 2019. In the past we’ve welcomed teams from local businesses Wild & Wolf, Apple and Altus, and we’d like to extend an invitation to businesses as well as individuals to ride for us.
Last year our team raised over £3,000, which made a huge difference to our work training volunteer mentors to work alongside young people facing significant challenges in our community. We’d love to get an even bigger team out there this year!
In the past 3 years, mentors and mentees have cycled together, which has been a huge achievement both in terms of the mileage and because they have fund-raised to help other young people in their own situation, too. This has meant cycling on borrowed or on mountain bikes, which adds to the challenge!
One mentee, Drew, has now cycled the 25 mile route twice. He says:
“After struggling at secondary school, I was mentored for a year and have gone on to do well at both college and at military academy. My time with Mentoring Plus and my mentor has shown me that no matter how different I feel, there’s always someone going through a similar experience. Having my mentor for a year gave me someone that was outside of school and home to talk freely and openly with. That made a huge difference. I’d like to say a massive thankyou to everyone at Mentoring Plus and my mentor, because without them I wouldn’t be where I am now”.
Tony, a mentor for 3 years, cycled the 50 miles with his mentee, Charlie, last year:
“We took on the 50 miles which as it turns out is quite a long way – my mentee Charlie is a young teenager and he put in an amazing effort on a demanding course and we completed it in about four and a half hours. It wasn’t just the roads that had ups and downs along the way but we made it! Any form of exercise can and does have a positive effect on most people. The smile on Charlie’s face when we completed the 50 miles wasn’t just one of relief but of huge achievement – he was wearing his medal with pride. I look forward to seeing you out there this year – I’ll be the bloke on the mountain bike. Cycle safe and wear your helmet!”
